How do we get out of these Paper Cages?

If you're reading this, then most likely you clicked because of the CUTE KITTY CAT ON THE THUMBNAIL, RIGHT?

Or maybe not. But still. It is cute :3

So, Paper Cages is a short, 15-minute psychological horror(?) experience that started its life as a game jam game. It was done for Spelkollektivet's 2019 Halloween Game Jam and was finished in 2.5 days. We didn't manage to put in the 5 days that the jam lasted, because we were working on our Steam page and new demo for our main game: Death and Taxes

With this game we wanted to delve into the subtleties of what pushes us over the metaphorical edge, of when we are mentally strained. Something as simple as sleeping in can be enough to ruin an entire day, week or month, due to the downward spiral it can create in our heads. Even if we lead otherwise normal, healthy lives, we can still be easy prey to our anxieties and involuntary self-loathing. We tried to put these emotions into an interactive form, which ended up being.. this game. It goes deep (or, well, as deep as a game jam game can) into our own experiences of depression, anxiety and psychosis and how we have dealt with it.

We hope you enjoy it and that it gives you something to think about... it is always difficult, but when you give your demons a name, it can make them easier to deal with :)
